Of all of the types of clothing, the coat has probably been with us the longest. Whenever the seasons turn and the temperatures drop, we must add on layers for warmth and protection. At some point, someone somewhere made the decision that outerwear need not merely keep people from getting frostbitten, but could also make a fashionable statement. Coats from the last one hundred years are particularly stylish and are often referenced by contemporary designers. This season’s oversized and printed designs were seen in the 1980s and even as early as 1900. Here are our favorite vintage coats to inspire your next shopping trip.
