No one is quite sure when the first hat came into being, humans have been covering their heads both to decorate and defend against the elements for centuries. However, it was in the late seventeenth century that head wear specifically for women began to gain some footing. Since then milliners have pushed the boundaries of hat convention, trying to find the perfect balance between form and function. Others, such as great hat designer Philip Treacy, see them as an artistic outlet and use hats as canvases to create wearable sculpture. Here are some of our favorites from the last 100 years.
