Point of Reference: Trench Coats

Iconic, classic, and utilitarian, the trench coat is one of those rare pieces that never goes out of style. As with many wardrobe staples, the trench coat got its start in the military, more specifically, the British military. Originally designed to be worn by officers in the trenches of the First World War, the coats endured so well that the soldiers took them home and wore them during civilian life as well. Designers like Burberry, who had designed the original for the military, took note and began to design fashion trench coats, cementing them in our fashion lexicons.

Today, the trench coat can be bought in any number of fabrics, colors, and designs. We love Burberry’s mixed textile coats to add some interest to outerwear this fall and winter.
